- Grading weekly homework assignments and exams
- Maintaining Canvas gradebook
- Holding weekly office hours (see Canvas)
- Answering student questions regarding assignments
Prerequisites: CE 202 and MATH 2531.
- Students enrolling in this class are highly accountable for the materials in the prerequisite courses. If you have not taken those courses or mastered those concepts, you should reach out to me.
Textbook (required): R. C. Hibbeler, Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics, 15th edition, Pearson, 2021.
- You can either buy this directly from the publisher or other vendors or go through UNM Bookstore.
Course Objectives: There are four modules in this course, each has specific learning objectives. The activities in each module are developed so that you can demonstrate you have met these objectives. After completing this course, you will be able to study and analyze the:
- Kinematics of a particle
- Kinetics of a particle
- Force and acceleration
- Work and energy
- Impulse and momentum - Planar kinematics of a rigid body
- Planar kinetics of a rigid body
- Force and acceleration
- Work and energy
- Impulse and momentum
Course Assessments:
Assessment | Percentage |

Homeworks | 30% |
Midterm 1 | 20% |
Midterm 2 | 20% |
Final Exam | 25% |
Attendance | 5% |
Extra Credits: Participation | 5% |
Grading:
The total percentage \(p\)% corresponds the final grades as follows.
- A+, if \(p \in\) [98,105]
- A, if \(p \in\) [92,98)
- A-, if \(p \in\) [90,92)
- B+, if \(p \in\) [88,90)

- C+, if \(p \in\) [68,70)
- C, if \(p \in\) [62,68)
- C-, if \(p \in\) [60,62)
- F, if \(p \in\) [0,60)
Homework Assignments: There will be 12 homework assignments in this course. You are encouraged to collaborate and cooperate with your peers on these assignments; however, you should only hand in your own original efforts. Evidence of plagiarism will be dealt with seriously.
Exams: There will be two midterm exams and one comprehensive final exam. The exams will be scheduled during the semester. A single-sided-letter-size printing paper for equations is allowed.
- The exams are opportunities for students to receive multiple feedback on their performance throughout the course to see how they are doing so that they can identify places they need to apply more effort or try new study strategies. My hope is that all students will develop the knowledge they need to do well in this course and all students – even those who perform well early in the semester will improve and develop greater understanding of the course contents through the practices.
Course Policies:
Credit-hour statement
This is a three-credit-hour course. Class meets two 75-minute sessions during the semester. Please plan for a minimum of six hours of out-of-class work (or homework, study, assignment completion, and class preparation) each week.
Work Habits
- Due dates are non-negotiable, and late work will NOT be accepted!
- Plan minimum of six hours of out-of-class work each week. In the past, students typically spent on this course is 9-12 hours weekly.
- Many students have found that time management workshops can help them meet their goals (consult Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) website under "services"). CAPS is a free-of-charge educational assistance program available to UNM students enrolled in classes. Online services include the Online Writing Lab, chatting with or asking a question of a tutor.
Ethics
- You are expected to abide by the University policies on academic honesty and integrity as given in the Student Handbook. Violations of these policies will not be tolerated and are subject to severe sanctions up to and including expulsion from the university.
- If you are concerned about how well you are doing in this course, please come speak with me instead of considering academic misconduct.
Drop Policy
- This course falls under all UNM policies for last day to drop courses, etc. Please see the UNM Course Catalog for information on UNM services and policies. Please see the UNM academic calendar for course dates, the last day to drop courses without penalty, and for financial disenrollment dates.
Health and Awareness
- Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) at (505) 277-3136
If you are having active respiratory symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, etc.) AND need testing for COVID-19; OR If you recently tested positive and may need oral treatment, call SHAC. - LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center (505) 277-2911 can offer help with contacting faculty and managing challenges that impact your UNM experience.
